What power does a refrigerated container need?

Refrigeration units run on 380 to 440 volt three-phase power with an ISO reefer plug. A site with only 240 volt single-phase power needs a phase converter and a step-up transformer.

Answer reviewed November 2, 2026

Converting 240 volt single-phase power

The usual path is 240 volt single-phase to a phase converter, which gives 240 volt three-phase, then to a step-up transformer, which gives the 440 volt three-phase the unit needs.

Before you order

  • Conversion equipment is not included with the container
  • All electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician
  • The wrong voltage or phase can damage the refrigeration unit
